The Housing Development Corporation of Northeast Pennsylvania in conjunction with the city of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County and GRIT, Inc. has transformed an abandoned industrial site in a residential neighborhood in Wilkes-Barre into a vibrant development of affordable, energy-efficient, "green" housing that is close to major employers and a revitalized downtown center.
The Courtright Neighborhood includes homeownership units for families, plus twelve rental units for seniors. The 20 new homes have been purchased by participants in the Luzerne County Growing Homeowners Initiative. Constructed in three phases these homes include both single two-story and ranch style units and side-by-side duplexes. The rental units are available to seniors whose income is up to 50% of the area median income.
New Homes were built with low cost energy and maintenance in mind. The energy efficient design allows for greater comfort and lower bills. Lower operating and maintenance costs mean more leisure time and less budgeting for household expenses.
